Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has lavished praise on Arsenal and England midfielder Declan Rice, describing him as one of the premier players in his position globally.
In comments made on the TNT Sports Champions League segment, Gerrard highlighted Rice’s remarkable development since his high-profile move from West Ham United to Arsenal in 2023. “He’s going from strength to strength,” Gerrard said. “I think he’s one of the best in the world. I think he has become one of the best in the world.”
The former England captain pointed to several key factors behind Rice’s rise. He credited former West Ham manager David Moyes for providing a strong tactical grounding during Rice’s formative years at the club. “West Ham did a great job under David Moyes. I think David Moyes has really schooled him in how to play the position tactically.”
Gerrard also emphasized the role of international football and club coaching in elevating Rice’s game. “His confidence from playing well for England and being around that group of players, he’s just gone to the next level now at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta. Fantastic coaching from him and he’s up there now in the shout to be one of the world’s best in that position and in that role.”
The praise comes as Rice continues to anchor Arsenal’s midfield during a competitive Premier League campaign, blending defensive solidity with increasing influence in possession and attack.
Gerrard even admitted that he wanted Liverpool to sign Rice: “It was a fantastic move for him. I wish we signed him here, actually.”
